ABOUT THE PROJECT
Geothermal energy.
Regional cooperation.
Green transition.
Greet GEO aims to strengthen selected regional innovation ecosystems and accelerate the wider uptake of geothermal energy across Europe.
The project supports SMEs and local stakeholders in developing geothermal projects and promotes the sustainable use of both deep and shallow geothermal resources for electricity generation, heating and industrial applications.
Through interregional cooperation, knowledge sharing and the exchange of best practices, Greet GEO also contributes to strengthening geothermal value chains and developing enabling policy frameworks that help overcome regulatory and financial barriers to geothermal investments.

WHAT GREET GEO AIMS TO ACHIEVE
Our shared objectives
Supporting geothermal projects
Helping SMEs and local stakeholders develop viable geothermal projects.
Sustainable energy
Promoting deep and shallow geothermal resources for electricity, heating and industrial applications.
Knowledge sharing
Strengthening interregional cooperation and facilitating the exchange of expertise and best practices.
Better investment conditions
Helping overcome regulatory, financial and market barriers to geothermal investments.
European cooperation
Connecting regions.
Sharing knowledge.
Building geothermal
opportunities.
Greet GEO brings together European regions, experts, and key stakeholders to accelerate the deployment of geothermal energy and strengthen regional innovation ecosystems.
The initiative brings together the various disciplines necessary for the utilization of geothermal energy, ranging from research and regional innovation to investment and project development.
Cooperation among partners facilitates the transfer of knowledge between regions and helps turn geothermal opportunities into viable investment projects.
Greet GEO connects experts from more than 10 regions and over 20 key stakeholders, ensuring a broad territorial impact and the exchange of professional expertise.

EMEF’S ROLE
EMEF’s role in the project
EMEF leads Work Package 4, one of the project’s four work packages. Its objective is to facilitate investments in both shallow geothermal (ground-source) and deep geothermal energy, with particular emphasis on reducing investment risks and providing opportunities for training and knowledge sharing related to geothermal investments.
Various consortium partners contribute to these activities, including the European Geothermal Energy Council, the Energy Institute Hrvoje Požar (Croatia) and Bankers without Boundaries. The project also provides project development support for selected geothermal initiatives.
COOPERATION IN THE PANNONIAN BASIN
Building stronger regional connections
EMEF actively contributes to strengthening cooperation among stakeholders in the Pannonian Basin, helping to establish and reinforce connections between relevant organisations and market participants.
In Hungary, EMEF works together with the Hungarian Geothermal Association and the South Transdanubian Regional Innovation Agency, both of which are members of the project consortium.
EMEF has also established contact with the Hungarian Geothermal Cluster, which has been presented at an international project event in the Pannonian Basin.
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY AND ELECTRIFICATION
Unlocking the potential of geothermal heating
EMEF sees significant potential in the electrification of heating, with the utilisation of shallow geothermal energy offering one promising pathway.
As part of the project, a successful example of such an application has already been presented, demonstrating the practical potential of geothermal solutions in the transition towards more sustainable heating systems.
